Synchronoid vs Apache Airflow

Airflow is a proven, widely used scheduler with a large ecosystem. Synchronoid is a managed platform built around data assets, provenance and change events. Here is an honest look at where each fits.

Two ways to think

Tasks that run, or data that stays correct

Airflow models work as a graph of tasks. It answers the question "did this task run?" very well. Synchronoid models work as a graph of assets, such as tables and collections. It answers "is this data correct and current, and where did each value come from?"

Neither view is wrong. If your problem is mostly about running arbitrary jobs on a schedule, the task view is natural. If your problem is keeping data from external sources in sync and trustworthy, the asset view removes a lot of glue code.

@sy.asset(layer="published", deps=[company_profiles])
def companies_current(ctx, company_profiles):
    return company_profiles.merge(key="org_id", track_changes=True)

# Dependencies, retries, rate budgets, provenance and
# change events are declared, not hand-written.

Where Synchronoid differs

What changes day to day

Less to operate

No scheduler, metadata database or worker fleet to patch and scale. Deploys with syn deploy.

Provenance included

Answer "why is this value here?" without building a separate catalog. See lineage.

Safe with external APIs

Pipelines share request budgets per source, and failing sources pause themselves. See connectors.

When Airflow is a better fit

We would rather you choose well.
  • You run many kinds of jobs that are not data pipelines, such as ML training or infrastructure tasks.
  • You need to run everything inside your own network with no external service.
  • You depend on a specific Airflow provider package that has no Synchronoid connector.
  • Your team already runs Airflow well and your pain is elsewhere.
  • You need a mature, open source project with a large community today. Synchronoid is in private beta.
Migration

Move one pipeline at a time

Step 1

Pick a source-heavy DAG

Choose one that pulls from an external API and has the most retry or duplicate problems.

Step 2

Define the source and assets

Describe the source, then turn the DAG's outputs into assets. Reuse your Python parsing code.

Step 3

Run in parallel

Let both systems run for a week and compare the results with data quality checks.

Step 4

Switch off the old DAG

Repeat for the next one. Keep Airflow for jobs that do not belong here. You can also trigger Synchronoid runs from Airflow through the REST API.

Orchestration Compare with building in-house ETL and ELT
