Build it yourself, or ship this quarter
A workflow engine, a queue and some custom tooling can get you pipelines. Rate budgets, provenance, quality checks, a control room and change feeds are the parts that take the second year. Here is how to weigh it.
The parts list
Workflow engine
Scheduling, state, retries and worker management. Usually the easy start.
Queues and budgets
Rate limiting per provider across all pipelines, with fair sharing and backoff.
Storage layers
Raw retention, typed staging and a merged current view with history.
Provenance and lineage
Per-value origin tracking and a way to browse it.
Quality and alerts
Checks, quarantine, notification routing and on-call integration.
UI and change feeds
A control room, change detection, and delivery with replay.
Comparison
| Synchronoid | Build in-house | |
|---|---|---|
| First pipeline in production | Days | Weeks to months |
| Full feature set | Available now | Typically 9 to 18 months of work |
| Ongoing maintenance | Included in the plan | Upgrades, security fixes, on-call, documentation |
| Control over internals | Via SDK and connector SDK | Total |
| Data location | EU (Frankfurt) or US (Virginia), or dedicated region on Enterprise | Anywhere you run it |
| Bus factor | Vendor team | The two people who built it |
| Product maturity | Private beta | Depends on your team |
A simple cost breakdown
The numbers below are an illustration using common assumptions, not a quote. Replace them with your own salaries and timelines. The point is the shape: building is mostly people time, and it does not end.
- Assumed loaded cost of one engineer: $12,000 per month.
- Build team: 2 engineers for 9 months, then 1 engineer for upkeep.
- Buy: Team plan at $490 per month (beta price), plus 0.25 engineer for pipelines.
| First 24 months | Build | Buy |
|---|---|---|
| Initial build (people) | $216,000 | $0 |
| Upkeep after launch (15 months) | $180,000 | $0 |
| Platform subscription (24 months) | $0 | $11,760 |
| Pipeline work (0.25 engineer) | included above | $72,000 |
| Infrastructure | $30,000 | $0 |
| Total | $426,000 | $83,760 |
When building is the right call
- Your requirements are unusual, and a general platform would fight you.
- Data must never leave your own network and you cannot use private networking.
- You already have a platform team and most of the pieces.
- Owning the platform is itself part of your product.
If you build, you can still use ideas from our posts on idempotent pipelines and rate limits.
A phased path if you are unsure
1. Start with one pipeline
Run a painful source on Explorer, free during the beta. Learn what the platform gives you.
2. Extend with the SDK
Add your own connectors and checks using the Python SDK.
3. Decide with evidence
Compare real cost with cost insights before you commit to either path.
